So Here We Are - Bloc Party
Blue Orchid - The White Stripes
Here Comes Your Man - Pixies
Will You Tell Me? - Jim & Jules
Well, I’ve got good news and bad news.
The good news is that the show is a hit. The ratings for Today’s Tunes have been better than the network expected, and they’re rewarding me by rebooting the show… in America. This means I have to move to Los Angeles and basically start a whole new life.
Just when I was starting to build a real one here.
I know I should be happy. This is my dream, after all. My show is going to be even bigger, which means access to more artists, and more money, but I’m honestly devastated about leaving London and the people I’ve met here.
It’s not just Ziggy, who’s become an amazing friend, it’s… someone I’ve been spending a lot of time with here. Someone who’s made me feel like no one else has ever made me feel. I wish I didn’t have to be so vague, but it’s probably best not to spark anything I can’t take back, especially since I’m going to be a world away from him.
He makes me feel like Jeff Buckley. And I have to leave.
I’m trying my best not to dwell on it. It just wasn’t meant to be, right? Anyway, I know you’re yelling at me to get to the music, so just be patient, I’m getting there.
As I predicted (how am I always right?), Bloc Party is back with another great track, So Here We Are. Just when I thought I couldn’t love them more, this song has layers of strings and drums and devastating lyrics that are hitting me kind of hard right now.
I made a vow, to carry you home, home
Thankfully, The White Stripes have hit hard with their new single Blue Orchid, which is upbeat enough to distract me. As soon as you hear that opening guitar lick, you know you’re in safe hands with Jack and Meg White. I’ve been lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the music video (shh, don’t tell anyone), and I can confirm it’s one of the coolest vids I’ve seen in a while.
And, since I’ve been in that kind of mood where you just listen to old music over and over again, I’ve been back into Pixies. Here Comes Your Man is one of those tracks that can always make me smile, even if it’s the last thing I want to do. (Let me be dramatic for a minute, okay?) That opening Hendrix chord and bass line makes everything better, so if you find yourself in a mood anytime soon, throw the record on. You’ll thank me.
Before I leave you, and London, for the sunny hills of LA, don’t forget to check out the new Jim & Jules single, Will You Tell Me? It’s a bit softer than Riviera View, but it’s still got that brash, boisterous sound these boys are becoming known for. As someone who’s seen them perform live more than a few times, I can tell you Jim & Jules are here to stay.
Well, London, it was good while we had each other. Maybe I’ll be back again one day.
